The weight management store allows current participants to pay class fees and purchase products online using a credit card. Products are to be picked up during the next group meeting unless special arrangements have been made. Individuals who are not currently participating in a group may purchase products online with a credit card and select the location where they wish to pick up the order. After the order has been placed, the individual will receive an email from the KU Weight Management Program to arrange a time for pick up.
KU Weight Management consists of both an ongoing clinical research project (Weight Control Research Project) and a non-research weight management program.
Both programs use a holistic approach to cover all aspects of successful weight reduction and weight maintenance, including nutrition, physical activity, and the emotional/cognitive aspects of behavior change.
Program Background
The Weight Control Research Project (WCRP) started at the University of Nebraska two decades ago and transferred to the University of Kansas in 1998. WCRP investigates different dietary, behavior, and exercise-based strategies and their effects on long-term weight maintenance. The non-research weight management program was established in 2003 and serves individuals who do not qualify to participate in a clinical research study.
The cornerstone of the program is the weekly lifestyle clinic, which serves as both an educational forum and a support group. Weight management is a set of learned behaviors, thus the clinics are designed to teach and promote those behaviors. All classes are developed by a multidisciplinary staff of registered dieticians, exercise physiologists, and behavioral psychologists. Medical management is provided by a staff physician when the dietary protocol or participant’s individual health status deems it necessary.
Weight Control Research Project
Most studies start with a 3-month weight loss diet, ranging from 500-1,200 calories/day. Weight loss is followed by 3 to 9 months of weight maintenance, with eating plans designed for each individual’s body weight and the study’s dietary protocol. Attendance and participation is required at the weekly lifestyle clinics. Certain studies may require physiological testing on a regular basis, such as body composition, blood pressure, metabolic rate, and blood analysis. Most testing is done at the Energy Balance Laboratory (Lawrence).
External funding sources determine when and where each study begins. Funding also determines the costs of each study. Some studies have no cost and some require a fee. WCRP maintains a database of all potential participants and their specific health information. If you qualify for a study, you will be contacted and invited to come to an intake meeting where all details and commitments of the study will be explained. There is no cost or obligation to attend that meeting.

KU Weight Management (Non-Research Program)
The non-research program follows the same successful rigor and structure of the research studies. Dietary products from Health Management Resources (HMR) are utilized and some groups follow the HMR classroom format. After going through an initial 12-week “core” diet program, participants may choose to continue in an ongoing weight loss class or weight maintenance class. Classes currently meet in Lawrence and Kansas City. There are fees associated with participation in the non-research program. Costs depend on the type of diet the participant chooses (500, 800, or 1,200 calorie/day) and the level of medical monitoring the participant may need.
As with the research program, all potential participants will first attend an intake meeting where specific details and costs are explained. Participants who wish to be in a research study but do not qualify will be invited to stay in the non-research database and be contacted when a new class begins.
