Overview
Being
overweight or obese increases the risk of developing: hypertension, dyslipidemia, type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease,
stroke, gallbladder disease, osteoarthritis, sleep apnea and respiratory problems
and some cancers (endometrial, breast and colon). Researchers, educators,
government agencies, foundations, industry and others are promoting efforts to
prevent and treat obesity at the community level.
The 9th Annual Obesity Conference will begin Thursday by
providing an update on the National School Health Guidelines via Dr Terry
O’Toole who is a lead scientist for nutrition and obesity prevention at the
Center for Disease Control. A representative from Pennsylvania will present on their exemplary
school health guidelines and give an update on the BMI report card. Thursday
afternoon will begin with Dr. Myles Faith
discussing effectiveness of elementary school interventions and the afternoon
will continue with workshops of successful programs from preschool to teens.
Thursday evening will offer poster presentations of successful programs from Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Iowa and Missouri. Friday will
offer information from The Consortium to Lower Obesity in Chicago Children
followed with measurement and cost analysis techniques. The conference will
close Friday afternoon with presentation on Bariatric
Surgery, Breast Cancer, and the Metabolic Syndrome.
